There was a person who made a circle to keep me out,
so I made a circle to include us both.
TRIBAL RHYTHMS / THE SOLUTION
Tribal Rhythms' unique approach taps the ancient power of the arts and the primal need for connectedness to strengthen democratic values, raise self-esteem, and foster multicultural understanding.
Within the Tribal Rhythms learning environment, or "tribal village," children have fun while forming caring friendships and developing respect for self and others. Program activities promote creative self-expression, cooperative learning, and critical-thinking skills.
Children also develop self-discipline and a strong sense of responsibility, and learn consensus-building techniques for resolving conflicts without violence. The program accomplishes all of this using readily available low-cost and recycled materials.
Over 400,000 people have participated in this unique interdisciplinary arts program in urban, suburban, and rural settings throughout New England.
An essay describing the effectiveness of the Tribal Rhythms Program is included in the first-ever "Arts As Education" ymposium published in the Harvard Educational Review (August, 1991), and a book entitled Arts As Education (November, 1992).)
